The making of Violoncello

My sculpture of a young cellist, playing a solo in "Concert," was inspired by this video shared with me in 2012 by acclaimed composer Carman Moore.  Only 8 years old,  Ifetayo Ali-Landing's ability, beauty, youth and poise captivated me immediately.

Violoncello

I viewed a number of Ali-Landing's early solo performances while composing the sculpture, taking inspiration from this remarkable solo, performed at the age of 6!

Sculpting a cello player is an amazing education in music appreciation. Ultimately, the final form and style of the piece was determined by this video, a lovely performance of Camille Saint-Saens' Cello Concerto No. 1, 1st Movement.  Ifetayo Ali-Landing is 10 years old, playing beautifully with exquisite command of her instrument. My intention is to show the way that the music itself is playing  the musician.
